A tenure-track position for computational fluid and plasma dynamics is available at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). We are looking for a candidate able to maintain a strong research program in this area, connected to one or more of the main research themes at API (compact object accretion/ejection, star and planet formation). The position is planned on a tenure-track starting at Assistant professor level, but for exceptionally qualified candidates, other arrangements can be negotiated.

The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy has a long tradition of excellence in astronomical research. API is located at the Amsterdam Science Park, a campus that hosts the national supercomputing center, researchers from the Amsterdam Universities as well as national research institutes, and a Startup/Innovation campus. Scientists at UvA have access to national funding lines at the Dutch research organization NWO, and to European funding lines like ERC grants and Horizon 2020 programs and networks. API is part of the Dutch Top Research School NOVA, and research at API was recently evaluated by an international review board as variously ‘world-leading’ and ‘excellent’.

Job description

The Anton Pannekoek Institute is seeking to strengthen its research profile with an appointment in computational fluid and plasma dynamics geared toward astrophysical applications. The ability and willingness to connect to active research areas at the API will be a plus. Successful candidates are expected to make use of the ample opportunities to acquire external funding in order to build a research group. Contributing to the teaching program on Bachelor and/or Master level is part of the position, as well as participating in the administration and management of the institute, with the help of our excellent admin staff.


We are seeking a candidate with a strong research program and an affinity to contribute to the teaching and outreach activities of the university.

The candidate is required to have a PhD in (astro-)physics, an excellent scientific track record, and the capability to attract funding. The candidate should have the capabilities to build up a research group of internationally outstanding level and to initiate and carry out scientific research. The candidate should be able to teach and develop courses in astrophysics at BSc and MSc level.

The initial appointment will be for a period of six years for the position of Assistant professor. Based on transparent performance indicators agreed on at the start of the appointment, the tenure track position will lead to a tenured position of Associate professor in a period of maximally 5 years. In the fifth year of the appointment the tenure decision will be taken. These conditions can be tailored appropriately for candidates with more experience.

More senior candidates may be directly considered for a tenured position.

The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales and the collective labour agreement regulating employment conditions at Dutch universities. The gross monthly salary during the first years will be, depending on experience, between €3,475 and €4,757 (salary scale 11) based on 38 hours per week. After a positive evaluation the maximum becomes €5,405 (salary scale 12) based on 38 hours a week. . This is excl. 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end of year bonus. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities is applicable.

Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed staff are required to follow a training course for education, resulting in an academic teaching qualification (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years. Foreign teaching qualifications/certificates are assessed in compliance with the faculty’s regulations.
