Director of Research in Global Public Health Research

The MRC Epidemiology Unit, a department within the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge, wishes to appoint a Director of Research to lead a programme of global public health research.

The mission of the MRC Epidemiology Unit is to understand the genetic, developmental and environmental determinants of obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and translate this into preventive action. The department comprises an MRC funded unit with a number of interlinked programmatic areas supported by a set of large scale epidemiological studies, detailed quantitative metabolic trait studies, case control studies and trials that serve both aetiological and preventive purposes. The department also hosts the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), a UKCRC funded centre of excellence in public health research, and the NIHR-funded Global Diet and Activity Research Group (GDAR) which is internationalising the CEDAR concept of understanding and intervening on the population-level upstream social and environmental determinants of modifiable behaviours to address the societal drivers of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Director of Research will develop a new and substantive programmatic area on global public health research that will be complementary and synergistic with existing Unit activities. The programme will seek to understand the societal determinants of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and develop and evaluate interventions that tackle the fundamental shifts in the population-level dietary and physical activity behaviours that constitute the root causes of NCDs in developing countries. Research will be conducted equitably and in close partnership with collaborators in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) with a view to developing local capacity for research, knowledge exchange with policy makers and practitioners, and solutions to the prevention of NCDs that are economically affordable and sustainable.

The successful candidate will have an international reputation for global public health research. They will have led original research of relevance to LMICs, have experience of working with policy and practice-based users of research evidence and be able to able to build effective and sustainable international collaborative partnerships. They will have the vision, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths within the department as well as an established track record in attracting research grant support to further these developments. This is an exceptional opportunity for a leading academic to make a significant contribution to developing the evidence base for long-term changes in public health outcomes that are so urgently needed in LMICs.

The role can be offered as clinical or non-clinical depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
