Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN Early Stage Researcher Post in Motivation and Fatigue in Communication Settings (fixed term)

Applications are invited to work with Drs Graham Naylor and William Whitmer at the MRC/CSO Institute of Hearing Research in Glasgow, UK, as part of the H2020 EC Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN project ‘Innovative Hearing Aid Research – Ecological Conditions and Outcome Measures’ (HEAR-ECO). Successful applicants will also register for a PhD at the University of Nottingham.
In today’s aging European population, hearing impairment is an increasing concern for public health and social participation, affecting one in three older adults. The HEAR-ECO project addresses this concern by developing and combining new tools and outcome measures for realistic communication, and translating these tools into innovative developmentsand evaluations of new technology for those with hearing loss. At its core, HEAR-ECO will train a new team of researchers working at the nexus of technology, psychology, physiology and audiology.
HEAR-ECO will assess how task demands, motivation, and invested effort modulate speech understanding and hearing-aid benefit in daily life. The Early Stage Researchers will work together to creatively combine three established measures of listening effort, and to develop innovative conditions for testing hearing aids. Moreover, this research will develop bold new tests, analysis techniques, and technologies that will create more realistic listening conditions. As an Early Stage Researcher in this project, you will receive extensive training throughout the project. You will become capable of spanning the relevant disciplines and translating your knowledge into innovative hearing-aid evaluation and development.
Candidates must be in possession of (or expected to obtain) a first class, 2:1 or equivalent Masters degree in social, experimental or cognitive psychology, neuroscience or neuropsychology, biomedical or health sciences, audiology, psychophysics, engineering, or a relevant discipline. Candidates should have excellent analytical skills, a solid background in experimental psychology methods, including statistics, and experience with presenting scientific work. Candidates should also be able to spend extended periods in different locales.
Candidates will also be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/). In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.
This full-time post will be available from Spring 2018 and is offered on a fixed-term 36-month contract. The post benefits from a highly competitive and attractive salary, plus mobility and family allowances as applicable.
