This studentship aims to develop and apply advanced MRI techniques to understand the structural and functional changes of joints underlying chronic osteoarthritis (OA) pain. The poor correlation of standard MRI features of OA with pain outcomes calls for the development of innovative imaging approaches. The study will make use of latest MRI technology (Upright MR scanner) to probe the effects of weight bearing on normal and affected joints using tissue segmentation and shape analysis to improve prediction and understanding of pain. In addition, novel MRI contrasts developed and validated at ultrahigh-field MRI to index key pathological tissue changes will be translated to clinical field strength.
The Studentship is ideally suited for candidates wishing to develop a career in translational biomedical research with a background in Physics and strong interest in Life Sciences or vice versa. The student will be expected to develop and apply novel and complex MRI studies in healthy control subjects and patient cohorts, and to undertake advanced image and data analysis. There is joint supervision by Prof Dorothee Auer, Prof Brigitte Scammell, Dr Rob Kerslake and Dr Galina Pavloskaya.
Nottingham is a centre of excellence for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre) and for Musculoskeletal (MSK) Disorders both representing themes of the recently awarded NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). This studentship will be based in the BRC joining a multidisciplinary team of established MSK and MRI researchers with a rapidly expanding research interest in MSK MRI to address unmet biomarker needs in OA pain. The student will also be affiliated with the SPMIC, a world-leading centre of biomedical imaging research.

The successful student will be registered for a PhD; the studentship is available from September for a period of three years and provides a postgraduate stipend of £14,880 in year 1 with increments in line with Research Council Rates.
