Air pollution is associated with a range of adverse cardiovascular events including heart attacks, strokes, and irregular heart rhythms, particularly in people already at risk for these conditions. The mechanisms of air pollution based cardiotoxicity are complex and can be attributed in part, to nanoparticles containing aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The aim of this project is to determine the mechanisms by which PAHs induce cellular cardiac dysfunction in hiPSC derived cardiomyocytes and in freshly isolated zebrafish cardiomyocytes.  Experience in cellular cardiology including single cell electrophysiology and ion imaging are essential skills. The PDRA will be responsible for data analysis, writing up the findings and disseminating them in conjunction with supervisors and collaborators situated in Bristol and France.

The majority of the research will conducted in Manchester but with collaborative projects in Bristol and France.
