A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious chemical engineer in the field of solvent extraction for the recycling of spent nuclear fuel. The post holder will support the PACIFIC consortium within the separations theme by delivering research towards the understanding of physical behaviour relating to actinide separations and radiolysis effects within current and proposed advanced separation processes. Such processes to be explored include advanced PUREX, SANEX, i-SANEX, GANEX and EXAm. Physical parameters, such as viscosities and densities of relevant phases and the interfacial tension associated with these solvent extraction methods, will be determined by various methodologies and these will be related to separations performance by the determination of distribution coefficients. The impact of likely radiation fields and of any degradation products on separation performance in association with these physical parameters will be investigated.  The position will be predominantly based at the University of Manchester but may also involve work at the National Nuclear Laboratory facilities at Sellafield, and the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (Westlakes, Cumbria).

You should have, or be working towards, a PhD in chemical engineering with extensive experience working with radioactive materials, with particular familiarity in working with uranic materials. A willingness to perform experiments in a radiation controlled/supervised area under strict safety guidelines is required. Experience in the use of instrumentation for obtaining physical parameters such as densitometers, viscometers and tensiometers is essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and leading a small research team, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.
