PhD Studentship: Computer simulation and optimisation of multilayer quantum structures produced by state-of-the-art 3D printing

A fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship is available in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham on the design, optimisation, and analysis of multilayer structures comprising a range of materials and functionalised devices to be made and investigated by our colleagues within the Nottingham Centre for Additive Manufacturing, Faculty of Engineering.
In collaboration with Warwick and Birmingham Universities, as well as with the School of Pharmacy and Physics at Nottingham, the Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/cfam/index.aspxwill continue a deeper exploration the area of multifunctional AM through the recently awarded Programme Grant, Enabling Next Generation Additive Manufacturing.
The programme vision is to establish controlled next generation multifunctional AM and translate this to industry and researchers. Initially focussing on novel electronic and pharmaceutical/healthcare applications, the aim is to move beyond single material AM by exploiting the potential to deposit multiple materials contemporaneously for the delivery of spatially resolved function and structure in three dimensions.
The initial focus will be on understanding the interfaces, and the transport of charge carriers and heat, between the layers. This will provide the advances required to design and manufacture multilayers with layer thicknesses of just a few monolayers, which act individually as quasi-2D materials and, collectively, like superlattices that are small enough to exhibit quantum-mechanical electrical, optical, and transport properties. By depositing materials such as carbon, boron, and nitrogen, which are known to form truly 2D materials like graphene, the project will seek to make such nm-scale multilayer devices producible by additive manufacturing. It will also use additive manufacturing capabilities to make the functional structures, such as connections and mechanical supports, required to integrate 2D materials with other devices, thereby opening a route to engineering applications. The student will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers funded by a new £6m EPSRC-funded Programme Grant “Enabling Next-generation Additive Manufacturing”.
Requirements of the studentship:
- UK or EU candidates should have, or expect to obtain, at least a Class 2.1 degree in physics, engineering or applied mathematics.
