The School of Psychology at Nottingham has much to recommend it as a leading environment for both research and teaching in the UK. The School has the critical mass, ambition, and infrastructure in place to build on its successes and develop its world-class research and teaching provision. Working closely with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science, Professor Kevin Shakesheff, the incoming Head of School will have the opportunity to develop their vision and drive strategic change across the School.
The School provides a vibrant, forward-looking research environment that acts as the focal point for psychology research at the University. The School has held Athena SWAN Silver Award status since 2012, in recognition of the School’s commitment to supporting and advancing women’s careers in psychology disciplines. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) the School was part of a unit of assessment (Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience) that was ranked in the top 10 in the UK for research power. The overriding aim of teaching and learning in the School of Psychology is to provide excellence in education which is informed by the research carried out within the School. The School is home to some 900 FTE students, offering a range of highly competitive courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as PhDs and professional degrees. The School provides a diverse and inspiring environment for the scientific study of the mind and brain, on both the Nottingham and Malaysia campuses. The quality of teaching at the University was recognised by the results of the 2017 TEF (Teaching Excellence Framework), in which it was awarded Gold.
The University now seeks to appoint a new Head of the School of Psychology, who will be expected to bring innovative leadership and excellence to the School. The appointment of Head of School is for an initial period of four years, renewable for a further four years. The post holds an underlying permanent professorial appointment.
As a Professor, the appointee will be expected to conduct their own programme of internationally-excellent research, including the regular publication of high calibre research outputs; the provision of academic leadership; mentorship of junior faculty; the ability to secure major research grants; and the energising of collaborative research activity within the School, across the University, and externally. As Head of the School, the appointee will additionally act as an inspirational and engaged strategic leader for the School. They will be responsible for driving the development of the School through collegial engagement with faculty members; forging connections within the School and across the University; and maintaining oversight of the School’s ambitious strategic vision for the coming years.

The deadline for applications for this position is Monday 26th February. Applications will be considered by the Selection Committee and shortlisted candidates will subsequently be invited to visit the Campus. Prior to interview, applicants will be invited to give a presentation, meet with a range of Faculty members, and observe the Campus facilities. Formal interviews will subsequently take place in April, at which point selection of the preferred candidate will take place.
