The New York Ramblers is the longest operating LGBTQI soccer club and its Ramblers Scholarship supports young student-athletes (this includes yoga, dance, etc., as well as more conventional sports like soccer) who are in or on their way to college and identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex, or who are demonstrated and committed allies to this community. Applicants are required to fill out and submit the application which includes brief essays and two letters of recommendation. Up to two scholarships of $2,500 are awarded each summer. We are proud to expand the Ramblers family to include student athletes pursuing higher education who are committed to serving the LGBTQI community either as members or demonstrated allies. We hope that this financial support will positively reinforce their pride in our community and assist them as they follow their educational and career ambitions.
Awardees receive a one-time scholarship, paid directly to their school, covering tuition and fees. Up to two scholarships of $2,500 each are awarded every summer and publicly announced by the Ramblers Soccer Club New York.
We invite you to share this opportunity with any qualified young people that you know or with individuals who are connected with qualified candidates. The deadline to submit applications for the 2018 Ramblers Scholarship has been extended through August 1.
We also appreciate any contribution you can make to the scholarship fund.
We aim to grow the fund to support more and more young people each year. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship, please use the button below. For more information on the Ramblers Scholarship Fund, contact Community Liaison, Evan Phalon, at email@example.com.
2017 RAMBLERS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
We are excited to present the 2017 New York Ramblers Scholarship to … Mizpah Agyapong!
Mizpah, who will be entering Trinity College in Hartford, CT this fall, is an accomplished student athlete from San Antonio, TX, where she competed on her high school cross country and wresting teams before graduating summa cum laude. A leader in her community, Mizpah served as a role model and source of encouragement to her fellow teammates, while also supporting her local Ronald McDonald House to help feed those less fortunate than her.
An active member of her church, Mizpah was met with adversity when she came out to her congregation. Rather than disengage, she resolved by confronting the issue head on. Through playing in the youth band and reading scriptures at mass, the disapproving looks she once received began to dissipate.
“I’d like to believe that through my small opposition towards the cynical judgmentalism of the church, the congregation morphed into one that was loving of everyone, regardless of creed, color, and sexual orientation. Through their approval of me, I hope the congregation will be more tolerant towards future LGBTQ members of the church, creating a family that truly loves each other.”
When it comes to promoting acceptance and standing up to injustices, no good deed is too small. That’s why we’re proud to do our part by giving back to young leaders – like Mizpah and last year’s inaugural Ramblers Scholar, Alixandi Cepeda – who exemplify our mission of breaking down stereotypes about gay people in sports and forging new friendships as part of an ongoing Ramblers family.
Funds from the Ramblers Scholarship go directly toward Mizpah’s tuition at Trinity, where she will major in English and Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies. After attending law school, Mizpah hopes to one day become a future U.S. Attorney General.
